Dolls, I sort of saw coming. No, I hadn’t played with dolls as a kid, but I did collect stuffed animals and Playmobil toys well, well into adulthood. So, that I would start playing with dolls – well, no big surprise.
The dogs central to every single story? I think *everyone* saw that coming. I just really, really like dogs – all kinds of dogs, the naughty just as much as the nice. I’ve barely gone a day in my adult life without some dog glued to my side. So, yeah, dogs.
But fairies? There’s no precedent. I never really gave fairies a thought until they started showing up in my stories.
And yet now, in every storyline but one, there’s a fairy.
Little Faye, in Betwixt is the most central. I call her a pixie (because, no wings) but that will change at some point soon and she’ll emerge as a full-fledged fairy,
Among the flowers, which is sometimes a little mystical but never a fairy tale, sneaks one in in Rosie’s dreams.
And now . . . one has showed up with the sisters in In The Pictures.
I didn’t really plan for her (except, you know, in as much as I had her already in the house) – I’d already added two new characters and wasn’t planning on more. But then it just seemed obvious that she was the next thing to come out of the wardrobe.
That leaves only the very practical slice-of-life On Our Own to be fairyless, but I’m almost positive one is going to appear in Fern’s dreams.
So, anyway, fairies, Go figure.
